Twenty Steps for 2017

img_3996This past Friday came and went. We have a new President with a clear message: the government is in the people’s hands. Ours. Millions of people are terrified; millions more are thrilled. Personally, I’m unsure, and the future seems uncertain. I am, however, a fervent believer in that fact that thoughts create reality. So do actions. Here are 20 actionable steps to help us feel a little more in control over the next year—or four!

1. Get passionate about the issues that resonate with you.

Millions of women just marched in cities across our nation to send a clear message. What message do you want to send? Find people that agree with you and share your ideas!

 2. Get involved in local government.

What excites you about your community? What concerns do you have? If you’re unsure about the nation’s future, get involved on a local level. Last year, I spoke out with my colleagues at our local board meetings for teacher compensation. This year, my paycheck reflects our combined efforts. So, speak up—it could really pay off!

3. Introduce yourself to someone who looks/thinks/worships differently than you.

4. Listen to the viewpoints of people who look/think/worship differently than you.

Don’t just listen to respond. Listen to understand.

5. Seek out people who are older or younger than you.

Again, listen to understand. Find out why people feel the way they do.

6. Join a book club.

Gain exposure to new ideas this way, too.

7. Attack issues, not people.

Debate is helpful—necessary, even. Don’t use it as an opportunity for put-downs. Keep your temper in check so you don’t resort to name-calling.

8. Throw out ideas, not bricks.

 9. Volunteer.

 10. Spend time with a child in need.

Scientific research shows us that mentorship is a key factor in the success of our students at promise. Organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of America will match you with a child who could really benefit from your time.

11. Offer to tutor children at a local school.

If you’re worried about the years to come, helping a child reach his or her potential is a fabulous way to invest in the future.

12. Have lunch with kids at your local elementary, middle, or high school.

A half hour or so per week can make a huge difference in the life of a child. You may be the only adult to offer undivided attention to this child all day. Parents often work two or three jobs to make ends meet. Be a part of the village it takes to bring up a child.

 13. Donate to charities that support local families in need.

Let’s be the change we want to see.

14. Spend time helping at your local food bank.

15. Pay for the family’s meal behind you in the drive-through line.

Inspire someone to “pay it forward” and set up a chain reaction of good will.

16. Bad weather on the way? Check on your neighbors.

17. Make a cake with your kids and take it to an elderly person down the street.

18. Learn a new skill, or take up a new hobby.

Find a group in person or on-line to help you develop your abilities.

 19. Adopt an animal.

20. Just be kind.

No matter where you stand on the issues, kindness works. We’ve been told the government is in our hands. No one is truly powerless. Let’s live intentionally and create the beautiful future we ALL deserve!
